EMBRACE YOUR CROWN CAMPAIGN

By: Kristen Wimberly

Fight the stigma.

What has been your experience with mental health? Are there any struggles you overcame or how do you hope to help others overcome theirs? In college, I experienced a season of depression. Although I had friends that I knew were there for me, I felt completely alone. I encourage others that go through something similar to turn that into a positive. Spend time with yourself, and grow your relationship with God.

From your knowledge, what myths or negative stigmas have been attached to black mental health? If any, how did they shape your thoughts about getting help/going to therapy?

Black people are supposed to be strong. If you talk about mental health then you're looked as though something is wrong with you. In reality, it's completely not true. For a long time, I was afraid to go to therapy. However, after a close experience with mental health in her family, my mom encouraged me to go to therapy.

Have you ever been to therapy? Why or why not? On a scale of 1-5 how important is it to have a therapist that is culturally competent?

Yes, I've been to therapy to discuss issues with past trauma and abuse. 5

Was there any reason why you were not able to seek therapy?
